CHRONIC PAIN

Pain is one of the ways our body signals it needs our attention.

Chronic pain refers to any condition which causes pain that lasts more than 6 months. When we are in pain, our body is signalling that there is a deeper process going on internally which needs addressing.

There are many different causes of chronic pain, making individualized treatment extremely important.

STEP ONE – Establishing a diagnosis & identifying the cause of the pain

Establishing a diagnosis is the first step towards understanding why your body is sending you pain signals and what type of attention it needs.

Knowing the cause of the pain helps us to understand which treatments are likely to be effective for pain management.

For some types of pain, diagnosis can be easy. For other types of pain, further medical investigation may be necessary including:

  1. Lab testing
  2. Radiographic (x-ray) investigation
  3. Referral to a specialist by a medical doctor
  4. Specialized laboratory testing

STEP TWO – Treat the Underlying Cause

With some conditions, the underlying cause is obvious. However for other conditions, the cause is not as easily apparent or understood. With these conditions, different treatments may be tried before an effective one is found.

Treating chronic pain is not a “one-treatment-fits-all” scenario. Each condition requires specialized and individualized treatment to properly address it.

Naturopathic doctors have many tools in their toolbox for treating chronic pain which are natural, evidence-based and can provide significant benefit in various conditions. Some of these treatments may include, but are not limited to:

  • Natural anti-inflammatories
  • Nutritional support for nerves, joints and/or muscles
  • Immunomodulating botanicals
  • Dietary recommendations
  • Hormone balancing
  • Acupuncture
  • Stretch and/or exercise prescriptions

At the clinic, Dr. Noelle will conduct a complete health assessment in attempt to get at the root of the problem is and teach you how to help your body repair itself from the inside-out. She may recommend specialized testing to gain greater insight into your unique health picture and come up with a personalized treatment plan to address your unique health needs. Noelle’s aim is to get you to a place where you are feeling vibrant and thriving mentally.

CHRONIC FATIGUE (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis)

Myalgic encephalomyelitis (also known as chronic fatigue syndrome) is a condition where individuals feel pathological fatigue which is not easily explained. These individuals often find they have difficulty sleeping and feel unrefreshed even after a full night’s sleep. The fatigue may be so debilitating that it impairs one’s ability to complete basic day-to-day tasks.

Chronic fatigue can appear to come out of nowhere or start after a viral infection, and isn’t easily explained by another health issue. People with chronic fatigue can be prone to infections and may also feel they are continually on the verge of getting sick.

Individuals with chronic fatigue often experience over-lapping symptoms with fibromyalgia symptoms. Additional symptoms you may be experiencing include:

  • Brain fog & poor concentration
  • Pathological post-exertional fatigue (physical and/or mental)
  • Difficulty recovering after physical exertion
  • Unrefreshed sleep
  • Dizziness upon standing
  • Digestive issues (bloating, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal discomfort)
  • Urinary issues (difficulty urinating, incomplete emptying of bladder)
  • Sexual issues (vaginal dryness)
  • Difficulty modulating temperature (intolerance to heat or cold, sweating episodes)
  • Recurrent sore throats & flu-like feelings
  • Body pain which is widespread
  • Sensitivities to medications, environmental chemicals and/or foods

Chronic fatigue is not only physically exhausting, but also emotionally draining.

When we have chronic fatigue, we may not have the physical energy to keep up with friends and family members, and we start to feel socially isolated. We may find that we start to develop emotional symptoms we never had before, such as depression or anger, that send us down a negative spiral.

Noelle understands how hard it can be to live with chronic fatigue and offers real solutions to her patients that are natural, safe and give hope for a vibrant future.
